When lighting
designer David LaVigna of Simply By Others, LLC was hired to create the design for
Strike LI, a 50,000 sq ft entertainment space with 22 bowling alleys, 3 full service bars,
a sushi bar, private lounges, and a VIP room overlooking a go-kart track, he knew that
having a strong vision of the project was going to be instrumental in his success. Having
already created one space for his client, Strike Holdings, LaVigna was well aware of the
scheduling difficulties and inherent changes ahead of him. He decided very early on that
previsualization was going to be essential in communicating his ideas and for maintaining
a tight handle on his budget. LaVigna and
partner Ellen Lampros approached Prelite with a project that would require a great deal of
detail. The drawings created for Simply By Others would be used to walk the end-client
through the entire venue.
The
lighting system was to be controlled via a Horizon Playback Controller. All aspects of
lighting were to be controlled - dimmable as well as no-dims for powering up arc-source
lighting fixtures.
LaVigna
came into Prelite for two days with all of his ideas organized into Excel spreadsheets
facilitating the short time alloted to create the 30+ sequences he had in mind. In
addition, all organizational aspects of the show - labeling of cuelists, macro creation
for starting and stopping of sequences, and alternative looks - were done during this time
as well. The programming was complete 2 weeks prior to the install finish date.
At
least that's what everyone thought. The opening date was delayed due to construction
complications. LaVigna's on-site programming time was dwindling even more. Fortunately,
all that was necessary was the updating of focus cues and the tweaking of timing.
